This Week: The Title Tag

Title Tag is an important Tag amongst other SEO related options , as it not only communicates the theme of your web page to the human visitors but is also considered very important by the Search Engine crawlers. Title Tag is not a Meta Tag, but nevertheless it is the most important of all Tags. Almost all crawler based search engines use the Title Tag to gather information about your web site. The search engines use the words or the content of the Title Tag during the ranking process to analyze the relevance of your web page. Major search engines   use your web page's Title Tag to evaluate its relevance.

Over the past few years web design has grown from a utilitarian technical skill into an artform.  An artform which requires knowledge and skills in a broad array of disciplines.  Not only must a web designer know the technical application of HTML and the multitude of other languages and protocols to simply make a web page appear, but must also have a strong knowledge of the internet's infrastructure: servers, routers, operating systems, IP and TC/IP and internet security, and various broadband protocols.  It doesn't stop there, there are client-side and server side considerations, cross-browser compatibility issues, domain registration and hosting pitfalls and solutions as well as constantly changing and evolving world of web technologies.

If this were all there was to it, there would be a lot more successful web designers.  However, to make truly good and useful websites the designer must also be an artist.  Not only a visual artist, or a conceptual artist, but an artist with both a strong ability to pre-visualize but is a craftsman, one that knows how to use the tools of the trade. Incorporating traditional plastic arts, visual arts, two dimensional images - three dimensional images, and exceptional layout and design skills.

And while all of things I have listed previously are important, in order to truly stand above the rest, a web designer must understand Advertising and Marketing - and all of their associated studies.  The psychological side of marketing as well as the statistical, the "finger on the pulse" knowledge, keeping up with trends and values, and in counterposition traditional methods of advertising and marketing.  Now, meld these with the HTML side, the Search Engine Requirements and the incredibly unique paradigm that is Internet Marketing and you have a miasma of constantly changing and evolving rules and goals.

Anyone doing successful business on the internet knows that one day you may be at the top of the search engines getting plenty of site visits and sales - the next, nothing.   The Search Engines change daily - writing and re-writing their criteria for what a good web page is, then changing their algorithms for calculating page ranking.  Meta Tags, Keyword Density which was perfect yesterday and had you at the top could very well get you kicked off a server the next day.

Most web designers will not touch marketing.  It is too volatile a field, too unpredictable.  I offer my clients a complete website - it does no one any good to have a beautiful, functional, useful website if no one can find you.  After a number of my clients took their marketing needs to outside sources and were burned by their money-making scams I decided that I would bring Marketing sense and knowledge to the table.
